San Juan de Ulua

March 30th, 2008

Each time that I’ve been in Veracruz, I tell myself that I’m going to go to take pictures of San Juan de Ulua but have never followed through on it. One time I actually made it to the island but 5 minutes after it had closed. I didn’t make it again on this trip but did get to take a few shots of it from the other side of the port.

Photoshop CS3 has an automated featured called Photomerge. I used it to put together 4 shots of San Juan de Ulua in order to create this panoramic shot.

Opera Crimson, Element, LAX Hollywood

March 16th, 2008

This weekend has been a busy one. I shot events in Hollywood at 3 venues: Opera Crimson, Element, and LAX. Each had its own style and design but if I had to choose one to go to with friends it would be Opera. You know a club is pretty good when you get lost in it and have a difficult time finding the exit.

Element had a big dance area that was packed all night. They’re really DJ focused putting them on a huge stage front and center instead of in a little box in the back corner.

LAX had the coolest bar. Do you see it? Yes. Jellyfish, live jellyfish.

Cooking with Mom: How to cook Chow Mein, How to cook Fried Rice

March 15th, 2008

Recently, my mom and I have put up a couple of cooking videos online. Creating the videos allows us to spend some quality time together. She plans out the recipes, takes care of all the food prep, and cooks for the camera. I shoot the video, do all the edits, and eat most of what she has cooked. Then while watching the finished video a dozen times my mom makes a list of what we could have done better. I, on the other hand, let her know that I think they’re always perfect the way they are.

Our first 2 videos are How to Cook Chow Mein and How to Cook Fried Rice.

The one we have in “post production” is on making egg rolls. I think the title is going to be… How to Cook Eggs Rolls. This particular video will be more in depth and will expose our secret egg roll recipe. Stay tuned.

Bad Religion, The Briggs, HiFi Handgrenades @ HOB

March 11th, 2008

On March 2nd, Dave and I got to see Bad Religion, The Briggs, and HiFi Handgrenades at the House of Blues in Anaheim. HiFi Handgrenades came out with a bang. The Briggs carried on a song too long. Bad Religion delivered (I think). On this particular night, Greg Graffin and crew only played their hits from the early 90’s. I heard that each stop along the tour has a different theme.

Dave will be putting out a review of the show on Associated Content within the next few days. He is more knowledgeable on the subject of punk rock than I will ever be. If it doesn’t have an MC rapping and a DJ spinning, I just don’t understand it. Not true. I love country music and salsa.

Education and Creativity: UCI Farm School, Ken Robinson

March 10th, 2008

In my last quarter at UC Irvine, I made the decision to become an educator after observing and working with a group of highly creative elementary school kids at the experimental UCI Farm School.

Below is a video of Ken Robinson commenting on creativity and the education system. Loaded with witty asides and critical insights, it is a must see for both teachers and parents. You may also appreciate it if you are just plain cool.

Early Earthquake

March 9th, 2008

Earthquakes occurred early this morning at 1:22 AM and 1:24 AM. Magnitudes 3.9 and 3.1 respectively. No biggie. I was laying on my couch and felt a nudge. Half a second later my startled parrot fell from the perch in his cage. Of course my first reaction was to check to make sure no evil doer (ghost) was behind the couch. Then I walked over to my trusty laptop where I have the US Geological Survey (USGS) quake site bookmarked. Confirmed. No bad guys. Just a little seismic activity on a So Cal Saturday night.

The USGS tracks earthquakes in California and Nevada. It updates at least hourly with magnitude, exact location with longitude and lattitude, time, and map. Did you know there were over 18 earthquakes in Southern California over the past 7 days?

Here’s a screen shot of the site taken moments ago:
